Syringe Accessories

Syringe accessories are an essential part of chromatography and contribute significantly to the precision, efficiency and reliability of sample preparation and injection. These accessories complement the functionality of the syringes and enable optimal handling and maintenance.

The main types of syringe accessories include:

Replacement needles: Needles can be subjected to different stresses depending on the application and therefore need to be replaced regularly. Replacement needles are available in different diameters and lengths to fulfil a variety of injection requirements.

Needle cleaners: Needle cleaning is critical to prevent clogging and ensure consistent injection. Needle cleaners remove residues and contaminants that could affect the accuracy of the analysis.

Pistons and seals: Wear parts such as plungers and seals need to be replaced regularly to ensure syringe tightness and functionality. High-quality replacement plungers and seals ensure consistent performance and prevent leaks.

Syringe holder and stand: These accessories provide safe and organised storage of syringes when not in use. Syringe holders and stands prevent damage and make it easier to access the syringes during work.

How do I choose the right syringe?

Has a syringe already been selected or is it already available in the laboratory? Then the appropriate needle can be selected for the application.

Are you looking for a suitable syringe for your application first? Then you can here to find a guide for selecting the right syringe.

If a syringe has already been selected, the terminus (connection of the needle to the syringe) is also fixed. This results in a selection of possible needles for the corresponding syringe. If the syringe has a cemented needle (N or SN) or a Luer tip cemented needle (LTN or LTSN), there is no separate needle, but the needle is permanently installed in the syringe and cannot be replaced.

Selection of the point style

Once the appropriate hub for the syringe has been selected, the point style (tip of the needle) must be chosen. This pont style is determined by the application of the syringe or needle. Pont styles 2 and 3 are the most common variants.

Length selection

The standard length of the syringe needles is 51mm, although customised lengths between 10 and 304mm are possible. The length of the needles is determined differently depending on the hub and especially for Standard Removable Needle (RN) and Hat Hub Needle the actual lengths differ from the specified lengths.

Selecting the right gauge

The gauge indicates the outer diameter of the syringe needle. A smaller gauge indicates a larger outer diameter (gauge 10 has a larger outer diameter than gauge 33). The gauge specification can then be supplemented by the wall thickness specification. The manufacturer Hamilton uses an "s" for a thicker wall. A thicker wall reduces the inner diameter of the needles.

Syringes 250µl and smaller

For syringes with a volume of 250µl or smaller, it is recommended to use a needle with a thicker wall thickness "s" and a cemented or removable needle. For these small syringes, the dead volume of the needle (volume of the needle + dead volume of the needle hub) is the decisive factor and should be as low as possible. The dead volume of the needle can be taken from the table on the right per centimetre. For metal or Kel-F Luer Lock needles, an additional 10µl is added for the stroke. The cemented needle connections and the removable needle (RN) do not contribute to the dead volume.

Syringes 500µl and larger

For syringes with a volume of 500µl or larger, the flow rate and the back pressure are more important than the dead volume. The smaller the internal diameter (larger gauge), the higher the back pressure for the plunger of the syringe. Therefore, the gauge without "s" is recommended for these syringes.
