Polymers as filling materials in liquid chromatography are characterised by their exceptional chemical and mechanical stability. Compared to silica, they are more resistant to high pH values and aggressive solvents, which makes them particularly favourable for applications where such conditions are required. This stability extends the lifetime of the column and reduces the overall cost of laboratory operations. In addition, polymers allow a wider range of samples to be analysed, including those that would be incompatible with silica-based columns. Their versatility includes ion exchange chromatography, exclusion chromatography and reversed phase chromatography, with specialised polymers developed to achieve optimal separation performance for specific classes of molecules.

Which polymers are used?

The hydrophilic base materials used include polyvinyl alcohol (see Figure 1), polymethacrylic acid ester or polyhydroxymethacrylic acid ester. Styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer is usually used as a hydrophobic base material.
