Solvent Filtration

Solvent filtration is a critical process in chromatography that contributes significantly to the quality and reliability of analyses. Filtration removes impurities, particles and other unwanted substances from the solvents before they are introduced into the chromatographic system. This is critical to ensure the integrity of the samples and extend the life of the chromatographic columns and other system components.

Solvents used in chromatography must be extremely pure, as impurities can lead to background noise, ghost peaks and overall unreliable results. Unfiltered solvents can contain particles that clog the columns and damage the pump. Filtration is therefore an essential step to ensure the quality of analyses. This involves passing solvents through filters with very small pore sizes (typically 0.2 to 0.45 µm). These filters are often made of materials such as nylon, PTFE or polyethersulfone and are effective at removing particles and microbial contaminants.
